Which country drinks the most coffee?

Welcome to Mapped — one dataset turned into one map, every week. This week: how much coffee the world actually drinks.

Ask people which country drinks the most coffee and they’ll say Italy, or Brazil, or maybe the United States. They’re all wrong. Measured per person, the world runs on coffee in exactly one place — the Nordics — and nowhere comes close to the top of the list.

What you’re looking at

Finland tops the world, and it isn’t close — well over 10 kilograms of coffee per person per year, roughly triple what the average American drinks. Averaged across every man, woman and child, that works out to several cups a day. Sweden, Norway and Denmark fill out the rest of the top tier: the darkest band on the map is a tight cluster around the Baltic and North Seas.

Here’s the twist. Brazil grows more coffee than any country on the planet — and drinks only a mid-pack amount per head, below every single Nordic nation. Being the world’s warehouse doesn’t make you the world’s biggest drinker.

And look how pale the map goes almost everywhere else. The United States, for all its coffee culture, sits below most of Europe. The classic espresso nations — Italy, France, Spain — are mid-table, not top. And the great tea-drinking blocs, from the UK to India, barely register: India averages well under a tenth of a kilogram per person, less than one percent of Finland’s habit.

The takeaway

Coffee culture and coffee consumption are two different maps. The countries that talk the most about coffee aren’t the ones quietly drinking the most of it — that title has belonged to Finland for decades.

Source: per-capita consumption figures compiled from International Coffee Organization data (kg per person per year). Exact figures vary by year and method — Finland is reported anywhere from ~12 to ~15 kg depending on the measure, but ranks #1 in every credible source.
